40 meter wall prints: 200 Super-Heros!

40 meter x 12 meter, 36.000 pixel wide and 4.6 Gigabyte big image file: this is how the CG Wall Artwork looks like. 3d-io mades for Upstart! Wiesbaden the XXXL Imaginary for the IFA Berlin Customers and breaks the barriers of current 3d creation work-flow. In order to achive the mass scene of flying 200 Super-Heros, Art Directors Igor Posavec and Sven Sauer has rendered and painted swarms of 3d characters, combining them with matte-painting techniques.

The main challenge was to create the number 200 of over 2000 single flying superheros and put them all into a dynamic compostion of swarming particles flying at the camera. For this purpose we used particle flow with clip-bord characters. Characters were divided into 3 color groups, and we rendered 100 different poses of the character. The extra large Sky Backdrop was designed by Sven Sauer as Matte Painting.
The complete design of the image was divided into 5 steps: character desing, sky desing, character posing, compositing and final compositing with color correction. It took approximately 2 weeks to finish the wall artwork, from the first character design to the last retouch.
