 | PERRY RHODAN - The Legue of Free Terrans
The last illustration of the set was a character motive: for this purpose a 3D model was created from scratch and then combined with a 3D environment scene. Already existing resources from the previous covers could be reused for the background scene and the spaceships, but the character required a very specific and creative outfit. The storyboard by Hans Hubert, the author of the novel, described the outfit in detail and the image had to fit those descriptions. For the creation of this artwork, 3d-io relied upon a combination of Pixologic ZBrush, Autodesk 3ds Max, FinalRender, Hairtrix, and Eyeon Fusion compositing software.
The scene describes the heroic landing of Mr. Whistler on the planet, backed by the fleet of Skarabo spaceships. | | The Legue of Free Terrans - Character Design
The design of Mr. Whistler was done in Autodesks 3ds Max in conjunction with ZBrush and Lightwave. The main body with over 6 million polygons was baked with displacements into 3ds Max. Using procedural DarkTree textures 3d-io's team developed unique material structures imitating a plastic and rubber suit. |

| The Legue of Free Terrans - Compositing To give the scene the intended atmosphere, we positioned the character in a typical heoric pose, supplemented by a complex combination of back and key lightning, mixed with discreet Global Illumination. A multi-layered image consisting of numerous images of space objects and effects, serves as the background, combined with the landscape from a previous cover turned into a night scenery in Vue Infinite. | |
