 | PERRY RHODAN - The Teletrans Side
The first 3D illustration in the row was the "The Teletrans Side". In a far corner of the galaxy, in the thick and caustic fog of an asteroid field behind an unknown planet, the crew of the Skarabo Spaceship is hectically repairing machines in order to leave this frightening place.
A vivid, yet very mysterious atmosphere glows around the crew and the spaceship, announcing heavy action around the mothership - a mix of unusual and cold colours in the background illustrates the unknown, distant world, contrasted by warm colors on the workers and in the foreground leading to some positive feeling of hope for rescue...
The Teletrans Side -Background Info
The main description for the motive was delivered by the publisher as well as the concept art for the Skarabo Space Ship. Igor Posavec and Antoan Simic were in charge of modeling all characters and machineries in 3ds Max within only few days.
Final Render and AfterBurn were used to render this large image (2400*4000 pixel) with over 30 layers within just one night. "Using FinalRender distributed rendering over our 25 Computers, even the extremly complex procedural hull of the spaceship with many dirt and specular shaders was rendered just within 15 minutes!" says Igor Posavec, Lead Designer of 3d-io. | | The Teletrans Side - Skarabo Spaceship"The concept art of the Skarabo was very good, even precise scale informations were delivered, yet it looked very simple - we decided to pull the engines outside of the body of the spaceship and redesign the complete hull, while keeping a high resemblance to the concept art", says Antoan. 3d-io in-house prepared shaders for metal, spaceship hulls and dirt were combined with advanced Final Render materials containing multiple specular channels and reflections. Sice there was uncertainty about which perspectives of the ship would later be used on the other covers, the whole mothership was modeled with the maximum number of details on all sides. This decision was very time consuming but helped later for the other 3 artworks: we could show the spaceship from each perspective without the risk of revealing some unfinished parts. |

The model of the character was based on an already exiting Perry Rhodan character from the game, but was completely redone due to the fact that the quality of low poly in game charakters was insufficient for large sized CG imagery. The character was modeled in 3ds Max, detailed in ZBrush to almost 8 million polygons and displaced and textured in Max. | | The Teletrans Side - Final Compositing Being by far the most complex cover in the set, The Teletrans Side consited of over 50 different layers: the hand painted and placed asteroids alone consisted of about 20 MB of images. The dynamics of the scene asked for visual pointers to direct the attention to the damaged spaceship in the middle - two lines, one from the bottom left to the top right along the space ship axis and the planet , the other from the bottom right to the top left along the astronauts, both crossing in the middle and leading the observers eye to the centre of the image. This cross section was strengthened by the spiral composition of astrounauts getting smaller in the distance on their way to the ship. | |
